Search is changing faster than most businesses realize. Traditional Google results are shrinking, answer engines like ChatGPT and Claude are taking over large parts of the discovery process, and content that used to perform well suddenly disappears from search.

If your business depends on being found online, this guide walks through the actual steps that matter right now. These are the things I fix, monitor, and repeat for real companies every week.

1. Start With Indexing Fixes Before Anything Else

Before you think about new marketing campaigns, ads, or content, look at your indexing.

Inside Google Search Console, go to:

Indexing > Pages > Crawled, Currently Not Indexed

Almost every business I review has blog posts or important service pages that Google has removed from the index.

Reasons include:

• Outdated content
• Thin articles
• No internal links
• Weak freshness signals
• No imagery or low quality imagery
• Pages that are hard for Google to understand

If the page still has value, update it.
Here is the process I use:

• Add internal links to two or more relevant pages
• Add a credible external link
• Update the content for the current year
• Refresh the publish date
• Add branded or original imagery

Only after strengthening the content should you click “request indexing.”
If you do it too early, Google often indexes it and then drops it again.

2. Update Old Articles for the Current Year

Posts like “Marketing Trends 2022” or “How to Prepare for 2023” are dead weight unless you refresh them.

Turn them into:

• “Marketing Trends for 2026 and Beyond”
• “What Consumers Expect in 2026”

Google heavily favors recency now. A simple update can bring a page back to life.

3. Submit a Proper Sitemap

A sitemap helps Google understand what your site contains and when it changes.
It will not skyrocket your traffic by itself, but it improves the consistency of how Google crawls and updates your content.

If you use WordPress, Yoast or Rank Math can generate one automatically.

4. Remove or Fix Broken Links

Broken links send a clear message to Google that your content is old or neglected.

Use any link checker to find them, then either:

• Unlink them
• Or replace them with updated URLs

Unlinked is totally fine. Just do not leave broken links in place.

5. Build a Strong FAQ Section and Add Schema

This is becoming one of the most important steps for both SEO and answer engine optimization.

People ask tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude real questions every day. These tools prioritize structured information.

FAQ pages give you two huge benefits:

  1. More keywords related to real questions

  2. Better visibility inside AI driven answer engines

Write helpful question and answer sets, then add FAQ schema.
If your website builder does not support it automatically, you can paste JSON-LD schema into the page manually.

When you add new questions, regenerate the schema. It is not automatic unless you use a specific plugin.

6. Turn Your Videos Into Search Friendly Assets

Most businesses create video and then bury it on social platforms.

Do this instead:

• Publish each video on a page of your website
• Add a full transcript or summary
• Include the video at the top
• Add schema where appropriate

This gives you double value: search visibility and answer engine visibility.

7. Improve the Pages That Actually Receive External Traffic

Inside Google Search Console, go to:

Traffic > Links

Look for the pages that get the most referral links or backlinks.

Often these pages are:

• Contact forms
• Program pages
• Product pages
• Special landing pages
• Partner pages
• Directory listings

If a page receives traffic, make sure it is strong:

• Clear headline
• Strong value statement
• Images that represent your brand
• Testimonials or social proof
• A clear call to action
• Easy navigation to the rest of your site

Most businesses never check these pages. Strengthening them can quickly increase conversions.

8. Understand That SEO Alone Is Not Enough Anymore

This is the part that catches many businesses off guard.

Search behavior has changed. People are relying more on AI tools for research, comparison, and buying decisions.

That means:

• Organic traffic is still important
• But it cannot be your only source of discovery
• And answer engines behave unpredictably

Google rankings fluctuating is not a sign that your business is failing. It is a sign that search is evolving.

Build visibility across multiple channels. Combine SEO with direct outreach, brand visibility, and community presence.

9. Fill the Content Gaps Your Competitors Avoid

This is where businesses can beat larger competitors.

Answer engines look for information that does not exist elsewhere. If you provide content no one else is willing to share, you can become the default answer.

Examples:

• Hidden costs your industry never talks about
• How pricing actually works behind the scenes
• What to watch for when comparing vendors
• The problems that customers usually discover too late
• Transparent breakdowns that only insiders know
• Questions customers ask privately but never see answered publicly

Dry cleaners that list actual prices for different garments can outperform those who hide pricing.
A B2B manufacturer that explains the real cost differences between materials can become the answer source for thousands of long tail queries.

If customers ask questions that the rest of your industry avoids, answer them in a helpful and trustworthy way.
You become the authority.
AI tools start recommending you.
Competitors who hide everything get left behind.

10. Increase Your Local and In Person Visibility

This applies to almost every business sector.

Because so much early stage research now happens inside AI tools, your business needs additional ways to get discovered:

• Local associations
• Speaking events
• Community groups
• Trade groups
• Industry conferences
• Networking meetups
• Chamber events
• Founder groups
• Professional organizations

When people already recognize your name, the search engine shifts matter less. Brand awareness becomes your safety net.

11. Websites Still Matter and They Are Not Going Away

AI website builders can create simple layouts, but they cannot replace:

• Strategy
• Real messaging
• Industry expertise
• Conversion focused UX
• Detailed content
• Custom integrations
• A site that a real company can actually run

Businesses still need high quality, strategic websites.
If anything, websites are becoming even more important because they are the central place where all your channels converge.

Final Thoughts

If your business wants to stay visible in 2026 and beyond, focus on these core priorities:

• Fix indexing problems
• Refresh outdated content
• Strengthen internal and external links
• Build strong FAQ pages with schema
• Repurpose video into text based content
• Clean up broken links
• Improve your most visited landing pages
• Balance SEO with real world visibility

The businesses that win in this new landscape are the ones that stay adaptable. Search is no longer just about traditional rankings. It is about being present wherever people look for answers, whether that is Google or an answer engine.
